Sweden’s request for Sherry Lane traffic signal denied

Published January 20th, 2019 by Town Of Sweden

The Town of Sweden's request for a traffic signal at the intersection of Route 31 and Sherry Lane has been denied by the NYS DOT. “Although traffic volumes on Route 31 are substantial,” the DOT wrote, “the traffic volumes on Sherry Lane are not of the magnitude, that in combination with other factors such as crashes, indicates the need for signalization.”

The DOT did find that the section of Route 31 in the Sherry Lane vicinity would benefit from the installation of a center two-way left turn lane (TWLTL). “A TWLTL would improve access not only to and from Sherry Lane, but also the other residential and commercial driveways in the corridor. We have submitted this improvement as a candidate project for Highway Safety Improvement Program funds under the next Transportation Improvement Program Update. The project will compete with other safety projects in the area for funding.”

The DOT also recommended that the Town consider extending Gary Drive to the Walmart signal to give Sweden Village residents traffic light controlled access to Route 31. Supervisor Kevin Johnson said that the Town is disappointed in the DOT’s decision regarding the traffic signal at Sherry Lane and that the Town Board would have to consider other options to try to improve traffic flow and safety in the area.
